When in flight, the butterfly can be seen hundreds of metres away as sudden bright blue flashes. Males are strongly attracted to the colour blue, including blue objects which are sometimes mistaken for females.

Also known as the Blue Mountain Swallowtail, the Blue Emperor, and the Mountain Blue, the male Ulysses butterfly is a spectacular bright blue and black in colour whilst the female is more subdued. They live in tropical rain forests in Australia, Indonesia, and other nearby islands, and have a wingspan of about 14cm. It is an icon of Northern Queensland, Australia, and is a protected species there.
