More Platypus facts....
A truly unique semi-aquatic egg-laying mammal, the platypus has a body like an otter, a bill and webbed feet like a duck, and a tail like a beaver. Native and exclusive to eastern and south eastern Australia, they are one of only two animals in the monotreme family (the other being the echidna). Living in riverbanks or aside freshwater lakes, they create burrows for shelter not far above water level, often hidden under a protective tangle of roots. Mainly nocturnal, the platypus is an excellent swimmer, and uses highly sensitive electroreceptors in its bill to locate food on the bottom of the lake or river. The platypus forages for shellfish, insects, larvae and worms, scooping them up in their bills for storage in their cheek pouches until they swim to the surface to eat.
