The Powerful Owl is a large Australian nocturnal raptor, mottled smokey brown and white in colour, darker on the back, with striking large yellow eyes. Nesting in hollows of tall old growth trees, it is the top nocturnal predator of the open forests and woodlands where it lives. The Powerful Owl is a carnivore, eating mainly medium to large tree-dwelling mammals, like Ringtail Possums and Sugar Gliders, swooping down on prey with their large feet and strong sharp talons. They are also known to take roosting birds and sometimes ground-dwelling mammals such as rabbits or marsupials.
