Rottnest Island near Perth, Australia, is the primary home of the quokka. A type of marsupial related to wallabies, they have short brown/grey fur coats and can grow to about the size of a domestic cat. Also found on Bald island (near Albany), and in smaller groups in the south west region of Western Australia, quokkas live in tall grass or dense vegetation near water sources, feeding on various grasses and leaves. Mostly active at night, and able to climb trees, quokkas are also known for their delightfully charming smile, and are the subject of many happy tourist photos.
